Introduction

A visual guide to Ratsnake hybrids. Including photos of over 50 hybrids, marketing names, breeding photos in an easy guide format.

There are many different hybrid rat snakes available today, none more so popular are hybrid Cornsnakes Pantherophis guttatus . These have been crossbred to a whole array of different species producing some remarkable looking hatchlings. There are old world rat snake hybrids too, but not as many as the North American species.

So what is a hybrid? Basically one species bred to a different species. Even though many North Amercian rat snakes are currently classed as Pantherophis , this is the genus in which they belong, it is then the obsoletus or guttatus which assigns species, and then sub-species. e.g Pantherophis (genus) obsoletus (species) lindheimerii (sub-species)

What is an Intergrade? This would be where two snakes of the same species, yet differ in sub-species, would create an intergrade. However I believe that intergrade should only be used for wild snakes that breed without man. So any hatchlings from breeding two different sub-species in captivity should be considered hybrids.

Also, this guide depicts a photo of most of the hybrids listed but since many snakes appearance can differ greatly within the same species it should be noted that offspring from hybrid pairings can differ greatly too.
